Wood River Valley native Adam Marvel, 27, has been building a theater career in London, England and has recently returned to the United States to live in Los Angeles to pursue his art.
Marvel will perform Al Smith's one man show, "Radio," at the nexStage Theater in Ketchum on Wednesday, July 9, and Thursday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Marvel is the son of Hailey residents Jon and Stephanie Marvel, architect and artist respectively.
"Radio" is an award winning play, which tells the story of Charlie Fairbanks, a flag maker's son, who has big ideas. The play is about the impossible dreams people sell to themselves, which is very American and resonates with current times.
"I really like the play, and I wanted to dive into something that I was personally vested and interested in," Marvel said. "As an experience it is very distinct in its pressures, and I am so happy to be doing a performance."
Marvel has been studying theater and voice work for some time and the School of Physical Theater in London.
"Physical theater incorporates more to tell the story," Marvel said. "It's not just dance. It's about the unspoken. There are a variety of ways to do this, such as clowning and stillness, which is used in Japanese theater. It's very focused."
Marvel is excited to perform "Radio" because it is a straight play and will incorporate much of his physical theater training. Marvel and his production company have produced a range of theater in London, from large theater productions to back alleys and in open spaces under the stars. Marvel's "Zenzizenzi" at the Arcola Theater in London used a minimal but highly creative set design.
"Radio is a stripped down performance," Marvel said. "It's a chair and a few other accoutrements. It's very minimal. The play is designed from its version at the Edinburgh Festival."
