Monday will be Cathy Zaccardi's final day as board clerk for the Blaine County School District.

After 20 years of service, her retirement becomes effective that day.

She will be replaced by Laurie Kaufman, who has been training for the position for the past two months.

"I am sure she will do a terrific job and accommodate your needs in the manner in which you are accustomed," Zaccardi wrote in a letter earlier this month to professional associates and colleagues.

"I won't be going far during retirement and plan to spend more time with my husband and devote full time to our ranch," Zaccardi further wrote. Zaccardi and her husband Jeff raise sheep on the ranch they own on Baseline Road south of Bellevue.

"I would also like to say that I have been so very fortunate to have served two of the most astute superintendents in the state of Idaho, Phil Homer and Jim Lewis, which will remain the professional highlight of my career," Zaccardi wrote. "Looking back over the past two decades, I can honestly say that I could not have asked for a better place in which to work."

Zaccardi was honored at a retirement party at Hop Porter Park on Hailey on June 19.

She was also honored at the June 3 district board of trustees meeting, which those in attendance described as very emotional.

School board members read a lengthy poem to Zaccardi that they jointly composed.

One stanza reads: "Some think she runs the district, that truth is a well-known edict."

Another says: "Cathy takes care of Jim Lewis and staff, acting as spokesman on their behalf."

The school board also presented Zaccardi with a lei of white orchids and pink rosebuds. Lewis gave Zaccardi a bouquet of salmon and pink roses.

Zaccardi read from a letter she prepared for the occasion: "I cannot begin to express the emotions I am feeling this evening. It is a combination of personal fulfillment and deep sadness at the prospect of missing out on some of the most important and noble work available to mankind."
