Great day for the Sawtooth Relay

Hundreds stream into Ketchum

The weather hasn't always been sunny and warm for the Sawtooth Relay, but it was nearly ideal Saturday, June 14 for the 17th running of the relay staged between Stanley and Ketchum, over Galena Summit.

Nearly 260 teams of six runners completed 12 legs beginning at Stanley Elementary School and ending 62 miles later at Hemingway Elementary School, Ketchum. The course and start times provided teams with spectacular views of the Sawtooth Mountains.

Many locals and hundreds from Boise area were on teams.

Choosing to do the first six-mile leg from Stanley to the Redfish Lake bridge was Kara Ambrose of Ketchum. She was a member of Team Willy Nilly.

Ambrose ran her first Sawtooth Relay in 2006, but she didn't participate last year because of knee surgery. Why did Kara choose to go first? She said, "The delirium of sleep deprivation I guess! You get a little loopy running at 6 a.m."

To finish up her team thing, Kara also ran the downhill leg from Galena Summit to Galena Lodge that she found a little tough on the legs. Team Willy Nilly finished 235th in 11 hours, 29 minutes and 5 seconds.

Entertainment was provided at Atkinson Park along with Clear Springs Food trout fillets, Falls Brand polish sausages, Simplot potatoes, Albertson cole slaw, strawberry short cake, Coca-Cola soft drinks and Bridgeport brewing beer.

Complete results were made available Thursday morning on the sawtoothrelay.com Web site. The Mountain Express will list them in more detail Wednesday, June 25.

The Sawtooth Relay is a non-profit corporation benefiting the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation and Idaho Donor Network.
