A 19-year-old Hailey bicyclist was cited for failing to yield to a stop sign after he collided Thursday evening with a car driven by Hailey Mayor Rick Davis.
The Blaine County Sheriff's Office reported that the cyclist, Jose S. Posadas, was transported to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center and later released with a minor leg injury. Davis—who was visibly shaken up after the crash in the intersection of River and Bullion streets in Hailey—was not hurt in the crash.
Davis' silver Ford Taurus came to a stop at the center of the intersection following the collision, which occurred at about 5 p.m. June 12. The windshield of Davis' car was smashed in from the impact of Posadas' body. The broken frame of Posadas' bicycle was underneath the passenger-side fender of Davis' automobile.
"He came out of nowhere," Davis said at the scene of the accident.
On Friday, Davis held a press conference at Hailey City Hall. He said the incident should provide a caution to bicycle riders to "pay attention to road signs."
"It was very lucky that no one was injured seriously," Davis said.
A news release issued Friday by the Blaine County Sheriff's Office states: "Posadas was northbound on South River Street and Davis was stopped on West Bullion Street at the intersection with River Street, facing east. Davis proceeded through the intersection and Posadas struck the passenger side front fender of Davis' vehicle. Posadas flew off the bike and landed on the windshield."
The news release also states that Posadas "failed to yield to the traffic within the intersection" and was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign and released.
Posadas could not be reached for comment. Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Curtis Miller said Posadas' telephone number and address were unavailable while the accident was still under investigation.
