Golf in Featherville? You bet!

Looking for that perfect Father's Day getaway for a low-cost day of old-fashioned Gem State outdoor play? How about a round of golf in lovely, secluded Featherville, Idaho?

Club manager J.B. Evans, a former Ketchum ski bum from southeastern Idaho, called the Idaho Mountain Express Monday morning to let everybody know that the new nine-hole Elk Valley Golf Club opened Friday, June 6. The course is located between Pine and Featherville on owner Dave Mickelsen's old Angus cattle ranch. Evans said, "It's a beautiful meadow that used to be a cattle ranch. And it's got a great log hunting lodge for the office of the golf course."

How to get there? Take U.S. 20 west of Fairfield, turn at the Pine/Featherville exit and travel 26 miles from there to Featherville. There's an old golf cart strung with a balloon just as you get to Featherville to let golfers know they're getting close, Evans said. Cost is $20 for nine holes, plus $10 for a gas cart. Tee times start when the frost goes off. The club has a driving range and practice putting green, but you'll have to travel two miles to the Featherville Café to get food.

"It's a good place to stop for a while on your way to Boise," said Evans. Call 208-653-2376.

Bishop Builders best at one pitch

Bishop Builders won four games without a loss and captured the 2008 Hailey Coed One-pitch softball tournament in unbeaten fashion Saturday at Lions Park in Hailey. In all, 207 runs crossed the plate in 12 games during the day.

The builders (43 runs scored, 15 against) defeated The Life Church 12-3, got past Wicked Spud/Bradley Construction 10-5 and whipped Hailey Hotel 9-2 in Saturday's semi-final game.

Wicked Spud (4-2, 58 runs scored, 31 against) barreled through the loser bracket of the seven-team double elimination tournament with three lopsided victories, but couldn't handle Bishop in the championship.

Bishop Builders beat the Spudsters 12-5 in the finale. Taking third was Hailey Hotel (2-2, 51-26), earlier a 10-3 loser to Wicked Spud/Bradley Const.

Smith Sport Optics (2-2, 31-30), Pioneer West/Swaner Welding (0-2, 7-38), The Life church (0-2, 11-23) and TLC Seeds of Hope (0-2, 6-44) rounded out the field in the first slow-pitch softball action of the summer at Lions Park.

Redfish Triathlon and Duathlon draws near

With less than two weeks to go before the inaugural Redfish Triathlon and Duathlon, daily water temperature reports have race organizers hopeful that athletes will be able to swim in Redfish Lake as planned on Saturday, June 21.

"While we have prepared for a duathlon backup if the water temperatures at Redfish Lake don't warm up enough, we are hopeful the water temperatures will warm to our base temperature of 52 degrees," said race director Bart Davis of Hailey. "A few more really warm days and we should get there".

"We know that if we can pull off the swim at Redfish Lake this year with this cool spring that we'll be able to do it just about any year," Davis added.

Redfish Triathlon organizers are also looking for a few additional volunteers. Anyone interested should contact bart@RacingforRecovery.com.

Registration for the Redfish Racing for Recovery Triathlon and Duathlon is being accepted at active.com.
