Nine golds for Blaine kids at State Hershey

Saturday morning meet in Hailey

Hailey's Phil Homer Field was the site of Saturday's Idaho State/South Hershey track and field meet staged on a cool but sun-splashed morning for over 100 youngsters ages 9-14.

Blaine County athletes collected nine gold medals among the 42 events run crisply over two-and-a-half hours by a well-organized committee of volunteers. The kids and their parents were proud of their efforts and many improvements were made in times and distances.

Incoming Wood River High School ninth grader Kaitana Martinez defended her State Hershey South title in the girls' 13-14 softball throw with a toss of 179 feet and 3 inches, which was nearly 70 feet farther than the next-best competitor.

Carey School's Micaela Adamson also defended her state title in the girls' 13-14 standing long jump at 7 feet and 4.5 inches. The winner in the boys' 13-14 softball throw was Hailey's Ben Williams in 195-6.

Winning individual titles in the 11-12 age group were Ciceley Peavey in girls' softball throw at 115-8 and Cooper Bailey by nearly five seconds in boys' 400-meter dash at 1:06.96. Standing long jump winners in 9-10 were Hailey's Riley Boice in 6 feet and 7.25 inches and Carey's Jordan Adams in 6 feet and 5.75 inches.

Blaine County boasted two 4x100m relay gold medalists—the boys' 13-14 group of Drew Barsch, Tommy Bailey, KJ Savaria and Braxton Parish in a speedy 53.90 seconds, and the boys' 11-12 squad of Brandon Dolenar, Drew Morse, Quinn Guthrie and Cooper Bailey 1:00.81.

Athletes from Boise, Caldwell, Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Soda Springs, Pocatello and Fairfield joined the Blaine County kids for Saturday's meet.

The Idaho State/North Hershey meet is at Rathdrum June 21. Other western region state results will be compared with Saturday's Hailey outcome to determine qualifiers for August's North American finals at Hershey, Pa.
