Fishing Report by Bill Mason

by Bill Mason

OK, would the person or persons who stole summer kindly consider returning it? No questions will be asked nor will there be any prosecutions. This has been a very strange beginning to the fishing season. By this time, our runoff should have peaked but as all of us can tell, we have a great deal of snow-pack yet to come down thus prolonging and extending the high water conditions into the season. Unfortunately, this could mean that some of our great late June early July hatches could go by without us getting a chance to fish them. That said, despite the weather, fishing although limited has held up fairly well. Let's have a look see:

SILVER CREEK—Still the best shot around. The creek has continued to be active throughout the day. Surprisingly the PMDs, although not heavy, have been unusually consistent. Cut-wing PMD, Parachute PMDs and PMD Cripples #16 work nicely. Mixed in-between you'll find some Callibeatis spinners. Partridge Spinner and Callibeatis Cripples #16-18 will get fish to eat. In the afternoon Midgeing has been prevalent. Taking fish are Zebra Black Pupa #18-20 and a Britchell Dry Midge #10-20 although tough to see. Nymphing using Pheasant Tails #16 and small Prince Nymph #16-18 works when nothing is happening on the surface. May see a few Brown Drakes by the weekend but the cool weather may stall the hatch until next week.

BIG WOOD RIVER—Very high but fishable. It does take some long walks between fishable water which consist of pockets and the still water behind obstructions. Best flies consist of Cone Head and Bead Head Wooly Buggers #6-8, fished with a jigging motion. Be careful. The Big Wood is nothing to fool with when wading.

BIG LOST—Copper Basin is still way too high. The river below the reservoir running at 427 cfs is fishable but marginal to wade. Big Prince Nymphs and Copper Johns #8-10 would be the flies of choice if you plan to go but the price of gasoline could affect your decision.

WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Running too high and fast to be productive and fun.

PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—No real reports but should have good quantities of fish in both to have a good time fishing flies and bait.
