Adams Gulch Run is Saturday

The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum is staging its 31st annual Adams Gulch 4.2-mile Fun Run and Walk Saturday, June 7 starting at 10 a.m. from the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood location along Warm Springs Rd. in Ketchum.

It's one of those rare events where runners just show up and go. There is no entry fee and no registration is necessary. And there are no prizes, just a few refreshments. Finishing times will be recorded after the 4.2-mile trek along trails and pavement.

Last year there were 42 runners paced by Taylor Sundali (27:51) and Alexa Turzian (31:36).

State Hershey meet comes to Hailey Saturday

The 2008 Idaho State Hershey track and field meet will be held Saturday, June 7 starting at 9 a.m. at Wood River High School's Phil Homer Field track in Hailey.

Between 200 and 300 southern Idaho youth ages 9-14 years old and their parents will be in Hailey to compete for state titles in running, standing long jump and softball throw events.

Winners of each event at the state meet are eligible to earn an all-expense-paid, four-day trip to the North American final in Hershey, Pa. in August.

About 100 local kids qualified to attend Saturday's state meet by placing first or second in their events at the Blaine County Recreation District's track meet May 3 in Carey.

Blaine County has fared consistently well at the state meet sending over a dozen youngsters to nationals in Pennsylvania over the years.

Snowline Basketball Camp starts Monday

The 27th annual Snowline Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 8-18 is Monday through Wednesday, June 9-11, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the high school gym in Hailey.

Snowline camp director Jim Boatwright has been conducting basketball camps in this area since 1982. He was a high school All-America basketball player at Minico High School in Rupert and a collegiate All-American at Utah State University. He was assistant coach of the European Professional Basketball League championship teams in 1977 ad 1981.

Boatwright is joined at the three-day summer camp by Wood River High School boys' basketball coach John Radford, Wolverine varsity assistant Craig Eastop and Jeremy Burgess of Salmon High School.

Snowline Hailey, in its fifth year, is now for girls and boys in grades 3-12. Participants in grades 3-8 and 9-12 are placed in separate divisions. Campers bring their own lunches.

The instructors focus on individual and group instruction in fundamental skills. Games are played daily in team competitions. There are awards given for free throw champions and jump shot champions.

Cost is $125 for pre-registration (if paid by June 7) or $150 per person after June 7 or at the door. Fees include a camp t-shirt and awards. Send registration forms to Jennifer Boatwright, 133 Treasure Lane, Hailey, 83333, or call 788-3700.

Tune up for summer fly fishing

The Hemingway chapter of Trout Unlimited presents a program on summer fly fishing tips and demonstrations Thursday, June 5 from 5-7 p.m. during the chapter's monthly meeting at Roosevelt Grill, Ketchum.

On the agenda are fly tying demonstrations, instructions on tying knots, nymphing and dry fly techniques, and discussions about local insect hatches and what flies to use. The public is invited, no charge. There will be a raffle for great gizmos.

Holiday tennis tournaments will return

Former Warm Springs Tennis Club professional David Perry announced this week that a pair of summer holiday tennis tournaments will be revived this year, at Sun Valley Resort Tennis Club. Perry used to help Mark and Kathy Scribner organize holiday tournaments at Warm Springs. But Warm Springs Tennis closed down, the Scribners left town and the local tournaments weren't staged in 2006 and 2007.

Perry said the Lyle Pearson Fourth of July Tennis Championships at Sun Valley Resort will be Friday through Sunday, July 4-6, with an entry deadline of July 1. Masters racer Bernard dies

Bob Bernard of Tahoe City, Ca., a pioneer of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's (USSA) alpine Masters ski racing program, passed away May 20 after a long illness.

An enthusiastic Masters racer and hard-driving organizer, Bernard provided leadership over three decades to build a highly successful program that allowed recreational racers with an opportunity to enjoy a lifetime of ski racing.

Bernard was an influential member of the racing community. He was the chair of the Far West Masters program, founder of the Far West Masters scholarship program, and he was a national Masters chairman and U.S. Masters representative to the FIS. Coming to ski racing later in his life, Bernard became one of the best competitors in the Far West. He also created the Divisions Cup, contested each year at the U.S. Alpine Masters National Championships.

A life celebration will be held for Bernard on July 19 in the Lake Tahoe, CA area. For more info, contact Bill Skinner at bskinner@ussa.org or the Far West Masters program.

Idaho Vandal rooters will gather

The Magic Valley University of Idaho Vandal Boosters group is hosting the 37th annual Vandal Pig Out on Monday, June 9 at Clear Lake Country Club north of Buhl. Golf registration takes place at noon on that date, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The day wraps up with dinner, auction and talks by coaches starting at 6 p.m. on June 9. Local cyclists in Mt. Hood Classic

The 2008 Mt. Hood Classic bicycle stage race May 13-18 attracted a highly competitive field including locals Max Durtschi, Reid Pletcher and Brandon Lynch.

Pletcher and Lynch raced for the California Giant Berry Farms Team in Men's Category 2—Pletcher (8.39:48) placing 13th overall and Lynch (8.59:19) finishing 33rd after four days of hot, challenging conditions that sliced the starting field of 125 to just 42 completing the overall Category 2 stage race. Sun Summit Cycling Club Men's Category 3 racer Durtschi (8.43:30) was sixth overall. In his class there were 75 racers starting and only 40 left by the final day.

The demanding stage race featured the 17-mile Portland Prologue May 13, the Mt. Tabor Criterium May 14, the Cooper Spur 18.7-mile Circuit Race May 15, the Hood River Scenic Gorge 18.5-mile Time Trial May 16, the Mt. Hood Road Race May 17 and the Hood River Criterium on Sunday, May 18.

Schladming gets 2013 worlds
over Vail/Beaver Creek

The 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships have been awarded to Schladming, Aust. over a competitive American bid from the Colorado resort of Vail/Beaver Creek.

Meeting at Cape Town, South Africa Thursday, the 16-member International Ski Federation (FIS) Council voted by secret ballot to award the 2013 Worlds to Schladming over Vail/Beaver Creek, which hosted FIS Alpine World competitions in 1989 and 1999. Having won the distinction two times in the past, Vail officials said they would regroup and focus on creating a campaign to host the 2015 Championships.
