Mountain bikers head north to Salmon

For Wild Rockies river race

Mountain bikers will be treated to a sweet Wild Rockies course along two Idaho rivers during the third annual Salmon River Celebration Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8.

The two-day Janna Brimmer Memorial event features a rolling, cross-country 6.2-mile course along the Salmon and Lemhi rivers. The weekend includes the infamous "Salmon River Quiver Downhill."

Racing in Round Two of the Wild Rockies mountain bike racing and trail running series begins Saturday afternoon on the technical downhill track known as the Salmon River Quiver. The mile-long "Quiver" course starting just outside town on Discovery Hill, is unique in its design and groomed for high-flying action.

Competitors will encounter ramps, jumps, berms and even a ride on an old car body in the middle of the course. Practice runs begin in the morning around 10 a.m. with racing to commence at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to a barbecue and social after the racing, at Salmon City Park.

Darren Lightfield, event organizer and semi-pro/Pro DH and XC racer, said, "There are awesome vantage points along the racing area, and we'll have volunteers directing spectators to the best locations."

Sunday's events honor Janna Brimmer, an avid, local athlete who frequented the Wild Rockies series. At 9 a.m., the trail run starts on the same 6.2-mile course set for the mountain bike race. The mountain bike race in the foothills above Salmon begins at 11:30 a.m. There is a good stretch of single track right along the main Salmon River and briefly skirts along the Lemhi River.

The title sponsor is Brad "Lucky" Duke, who salutes his hometown of Salmon, Idaho. Other event sponsors include SCOTT bicycles from Sun Valley, Idaho. SCOTT is working with Wild Rockies by bringing a few demo bikes to Salmon for test rides.

Mountain bike professionals are eligible for the $2,000 cash purse, with cash prizes going to the top male and female Amateur/Experts.

Online registration closes tonight, Wednesday. Visit sportsbaseonline.com, or go to wildrockies.com for more details.
