Sun Valley Guide summer issue on stands now

With the start of summer, expect a few perks: long days, wildflower-dotted hillsides and the release of the summer issue of the Sun Valley Guide. Free copies of the Idaho Press Club's top-rated magazine are now available on news racks throughout the Wood River Valley.

The Sun Valley Guide invites readers to "Discover Mountain Life," and the summer issue celebrates iconic local figures who live this lifestyle to its fullest. Rebecca Rusch, world champion endurance mountain biker, is the cover choice for a reason. Hers is the lifestyle—adventurous, self-reliant and individual—that defines the character of our community. For this cover, photographer Nate Galpin captured Rusch as she prepped for a solo ride out East Fork, near the First Light Mine, in a summer dusk's orange glow. Idaho Mountain Express reporter Jon Duval writes about Rusch's unlikely ascent to world-champion athlete.

Since the Phantom Hill wolf pack took up permanent residence in the valley in 2007, we counted the wild gray wolf as a local, too. Jason D.B. Kauffman, the Express' award-winning environmental journalist, pulled from his extensive news coverage for an exploration of the controversial predator's return to the valley. Kauffman's "Tracking a Phantom" is accompanied by original Sun Valley Guide maps detailing wolf packs and sightings throughout central and western Idaho. Combined with a timeline marking the history of the wolf in the West, Kauffman's piece is among the most thorough examinations of Idaho's wild gray wolves ever compiled.

Mariel Hemingway is a different sort of Valley icon. She talked with the Express' Dana DuGan about growing up in a fishbowl community with a world-famous name. In this edition of the Guide's original "A Conversation With" series, DuGan learns how Hemingway navigated a genetic minefield to find her own better way.

The Sun Valley Guide is always up for a challenge. Peruse the summer issue to learn how to longboard surf mountain lakes, weather a storm of wedding surprises or even throw together a chilled-out summer soup. Don't miss new Guide departments like "Gallery Awareness" and "Sun Valley Style" for summer's choicest picks in the art and fashion realms.

The Sun Valley Guide would not be possible were it not for the deep well of creative energies alive in this valley. Please enjoy and share our stories with families and friends and send your comments or suggestions to editor@svguide.com.
