Minor league pitchers help teams into first place

Reynoso and Zachary

Local minor league baseball pitchers Ryne Reynoso and Matt Zachary of Bellevue are helping their teams into sole possession of first place of their respective leagues after Memorial Day weekend action.

Reynoso, 23, a 6-2, 215-pound righthander, is one of four starting pitchers for the Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Pelicans in the Carolina League. The Pelicans (31-19) boast a 20-9 record away from home and own an 8.5-half game lead in the Carolina South.

Monday night, Reynoso (4-3, 3.35 ERA, 19 earned runs in 51 innings, 47 K, 14 BB) won his first game since May 3 by a 9-8 score over the Winston-Salem Warthogs in North Carolina. The 2003 Wood River High School graduate didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work and left with an 8-2 lead.

Former Boston College hurler Reynoso has the best strikeout-to-walk ratio on the Pelicans staff and has the second-best ERA. The Pelicans have a seven-game homestand May 30-June 5 against the Frederick Keys and W-S Warthogs.

Zachary, 26, a 2000 Wood River graduate who had a 21-5 record pitching for the Wolverines, is currently a 6-4, 240-pound righthander relief pitcher for the Brockton (Mass.) Rox in the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball, known as the CanAm League.

Known in the Wood River Valley as the "Moose," Zachary worked an inning of one-hit relief and didn't allow an earned run Sunday as the Rox (4-1) held off the defending CanAm Leaguechampion Nashua (N.H.) Pride 2-1 at Campanelli Stadium, Brockton.

Zachary, who pitched for three college teams including Albertson College of Idaho, is in his third professional season after spending last summer with the Traveling Grays of the CanAm League.
