Wolverines score points in 4A track

In field events, distances and hurdles

Five Wood River High School athletes got their feet wet, came up with solid efforts and scored some points during the United Dairymen of Idaho's 91st annual Idaho High School 4A Track and Field Championships May 22-23 at Boise's Bronco Stadium.

Senior Tyler Stocks collected eight of Wood River's 11 points by finishing fifth in the shotput (45-2) and discus (130-1). Junior Rob Paris had a personal-record 41-10.25 in placing seventh in the triple jump for another two Wolverine points.

Senior Pedro Morales and sophomore Chase Caulkins competed in all three 4A distance races, the 800-meter, 1600m and 3200m runs. They pretty much ran together, although Caulkins (10:15.55) placed eighth in the 3200m run.

Caulkins also finished 15th in the 1600m final at 4:52.74 and was ninth, just out of the points, in the 800m at 2:04.57. Morales was 11th in the 800m at 2:06.34, 14th in 1600m at 4:48.11 and 12nd in 3200m at 10:28.57.

Freshman Tanner Dredge earned Wood River's other points with a sixth-place finish for three points in the 100m high hurdles, at 17.36 seconds. She had made the 100m HH finals Thursday with the eighth-best preliminary time of 17.21.

In the 300m intermediates, Dredge (49.68) had a personal record and missed the finals by only .047 seconds.

"All the athletes from Wood River were very focused and competed well. They were all excellent representatives of our school and community on and off the track," said Wood River track coach J.C. Nemecek.

Rigby (126 points) won its second straight 4A girls' team title over Mountain Home (90). The Moscow boys (75 points) captured their first state track title in 66 years by one point over Jerome (74), which has 17 state track titles since Moscow captured its last championship.

Other state team champions were Eagle (boys) and Borah (four straight in girls) in 5A; and Payette (boys) and Sugar-Salem of Sugar City (second straight for its girls) in 3A. Runaway winners in 2A were Firth's boys (5 titles in 6 years) and Nampa Christian's girls (4 straight championships).
