Kids are ready to Play Ball!

Youth softball, baseball seasons to begin


It's time to Play Ball!

This is the big Opening Week of the 2008 Wood River Little League youth baseball and softball season.

Girls' fast pitch softball games kicked off the Blaine County Recreation District summer program Tuesday night—and most hardball games begin tonight, Wednesday on Hailey fields.

Raeghen Peavey, BCRD Community Programs Director, said nearly 500 Wood River Valley youth ages 5-13 are enrolled in the program. A total 38 teams have been formed featuring up to 80 volunteer coaches and assistant coaches.

The end-of-season tournament schedule will be ready the week of June 16. For the 7-8 year-old coed coach pitch league, the end-of-season jamboree will be Saturday, June 28

She said that the BCRD and Wood River Little League Volunteer Board would like to thank all the team sponsors who make the program possible. Here is a list of team names (sponsors in parentheses) and general outline of the schedule:

Girls' Fast Pitch Softball 7-10: Kansas State Wildcats (MFF Special Occasion Apparel), Washington Huskies (Elk Roofing Inc.), Kansas Jayhawks (POWER Engineers) and Wisconsin Badgers (Webb Landscape Inc.).

Games Tuesdays and Thursdays May 27-June 19 at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the WRHS softball field and Woodside Elementary School field in Hailey, followed by a tournament. Peavey is league director.

Girls' Fast Pitch Softball 11-13: Florida State Seminoles (S. Erwin Excavation), Miami Hurricanes (POWER Engineers) and Michigan Wolverines (Mahoney's Bar & Grill).

Games Tuesdays and Thursdays May 27-June 19 at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the WRHS softball field in Hailey, followed by a tournament. Peavey is league director.

WRLL T-Ball (ages 5-6): Kentucky Wildcats (Ree Construction), Arkansas Razorbacks (Vintage Gypsy), Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (Wood River Lions Club), North Carolina Tar Heels (Evans Plumbing Inc.), Colorado State Rams (Shorty's Diner), Memphis Tigers (First Bank of Idaho), Georgia Bulldogs (Sawtooth Wood Products), Kansas State Wildcats (Freedom Storage Center) and Auburn Tigers (Renewable Power Management).

Games Tuesdays and Thursdays June 3-26 at 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at The Community Campus field in Hailey and Atkinson Park diamond in Ketchum. Peavey is league director.

WRLL Coed Coach Pitch (7-8): Carolina Mudcats (Hailey Eye Center), Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Uhrig Fencing), Orem Owls (Gem State Roofing Inc.), Greensboro Grasshoppers (Whitehead Landscaping), Louisville Bats (Blaine County Fitness Center), Savannah Sand Gnats (Allred Precision Millwork Inc.), Burlington Bees (Rico's Pizza & Pasta), Mahoning Scrappers (Lutz Rentals) and Midland Rock Hounds (Wood River Community YMCA).

Games Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays May 28-June 27 at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. at Nelson Field in Hailey and Atkinson Park, Ketchum. An end-of-season jamboree will be Saturday, June 28. Peavey is league director. League coordinators are James Nelson and Brian Nelson.

WRLL Kid Pitch (9-10): Batavia Muckdogs (Sawtooth Auto Sales), Binghamton Mets (Uberstix LLC), West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (Rocky Mountain Hardware), Mahoning Scrappers (Joe's Backhoe Service), Aberbeen Ironbirds (Bald Mountain Realty), Durham Bulls (Smoky Mountain Pizzeria Grill), Charleston Riverdogs (POWER Engineers) and Tucson Sidewinders (Smith Sport Optics Inc.).

Games Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays May 28-June 20 at 5:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Nelson Field and Atkinson Park. An end-of-season tournament follows. Peavey is league director. League coordinator is Lars Hovey.

WRLL Kid Pitch (11-12): Los Angeles Dodgers (DL Evans Bank), New York Yankees (Donnelley Sports), Colorado Rockies (Marketron International), Baltimore Orioles (Glass Tech) and St. Louis Cardinals (McLaughlin Architects).

Games Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays May 28-June 20 at 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at Nelson Field and Atkinson Park, followed by a tournament. Peavey is league director. League coordinator is Andy Portillo.
