It was a streamlined awards program, 45 minutes in length, with new emphasis on slide show photographs of the winners and a quick mention of their names and achievements.

But the purpose was similar to other Wood River High School's awards programs in past years—honoring outstanding academic efforts for the school year.

With their proud parents looking on, students at the Hailey high school were honored Wednesday morning during the school's "Academic and Citizenship Awards 2008" recognition program.

Citizenship Awards were given to eight students.

Principal John Blackman announced the Citizenship Awards, the only awards voted by students. Honored were male and female members of the senior, junior, sophomore and freshman classes.

Senior Citizenship Award honorees were Katie Pruett and Thomas Cruz. Junior winners were Amy Tamayo and Nick Kavanagh.

Sophomore Citizenship Award recipients were Stephanie Sloan for a second straight year and Chauncey McGraw. Freshman winners were Jessica Hamilton and James Paris.

"You Make a Difference Awards" went to the following community members, school staff members and teachers for their contributions:

Community member, Monte Brothwell; classified staff, John "B.J." Miller; and Wood River High School certified staff, Glenn Lindsey.

Blackman also announced the school's top scholars for the May 28 graduation ceremony.

Valedictorian is Lauren Morgenthaler, daughter of Paul Morgenthaler and Susan Canham. Salutatorian is Anna Chrysikopoulos, daughter of John Chrysikopoulos and Joan Levins.

Student speakers at graduation will be Charles Gordon Knight, Desiree Peters and Lauren Morgenthaler. Guest speaker will be retired Spanish teacher Nancy Williams.

On Wednesday, awards for outstanding four-year academic efforts were presented to Benjamin "Bo" Brown (Science), Zach Smith and Tessa Barrow (Art), and Lauren Morgenthaler (English and Social Studies).

Winning the Jim Praegitzer Math Award was Nathan Payne, who took both advanced placement calculus and AP statistics.

Advanced placement students also conducted a fund-raiser and collected $1,650 in one day of canvassing the community. Ruby Nava was the recipient of the gift to help her future travels abroad.
