Deep Carey boys go the distance

Panthers, Camas girls repeat in Northside

Northside Conference track and field teams have faced a tough assignment all spring trying to play catch-up with Carey Schools' depth and distance dominance.

Thursday's Northside Conference Championships were no exception.

Carey's 55 points in distance runs and 38 points in the relays helped the host Panther boys to a 162-111 victory over the Shoshone Indians in the Northside season finals on yet another cool and breezy afternoon at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Also repeating its 2007 Northside team victory was the quick Camas County girls' squad from Fairfield. The well-balanced Mushers put up 42 points in the sprints, 32 relays and 34 field to edge out Shoshone 144-122. The Carey girls (72) were third.

High-point winners for the Northside finals were Richfield senior Morgan (Moe) Hubsmith with 36 points including gold medals in the 400-meter dash, long jump and triple jump, and Dietrich junior sprinter Jaren Stoddard (32.5 points), who swept the 100m, 200m and 400m with time to spare on the boys' side.

Carey's individual gold medals came from Tyler Parke and Jessica Parke (high jump), Blake Whitby (3200m), D.J. Simpson (800m) and Amy Ellsworth (800m). Simpson took the lead in the 14-runner field with 325m to go and beat Dietrich's Scott Perron by .90 seconds. Perron won the 1600m with a strong finish.

The 4x100m Panther relay of Jacy Baird, D.J. Simpson, Heith Adamson and Gonzalo Zarate shaded Shoshone by .10 seconds as Adamson put the Panthers in the lead. Carey easily won the 4x200m and 4x400m.

Gold medals from third-place Camas (103 points) came from Derek Walker (long jump), senior J.D. Jewett (shotput) and Jeff Ellingson (discus) along with senior Ben McLam in the 300m intermediate hurdles.

Camas County junior sprinter Lindsey Peterson captured the 100m and 200m dashes and was a big factor on two winning Camas relays (4x100m, medley) to finish with 25 points. Hailey Gregory won the 300m intermediates for Camas and Toni Wear took 100m high hurdles.

Last year's State 1A girls' 3200m queen Taylor Astle of Shoshone captured the two-miler by 52 seconds and the sophomore won the 1600m by 21 seconds. Kelly Perron of Shoshone took the shot and discus, while Dietrich claimed gold in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays Thursday.

The Northside schools travel to Buhl High School for the state-qualifying Northside-Southside 1A meet today, Wednesday and Thursday, May 15. From the district meet, four individuals and two relay teams make the grade for the State 1A track meet May 22-23 in Boise. Here are last Thursday's results from Carey:
