Discuss strengths in relationships

St. Thomas Parents of Preschoolers invites people to attend a couples' workshop held by popular counselors Bob and Wendy Werth titled, "Focusing on strengths in relationships—a positive approach that leads to enhanced communication and intimacy."

The workshop will be 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, in the Wood River YMCA Community Room, in Ketchum.

The Wood River YMCA provides childcare at these meetings (free for members, $5 per child for non-YMCA members). To register for childcare, call Anna Johnson, POPS coordinator, at 726-5349, ext. 13.

Learn to eat intuitively

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center will present a four-part series on intuitive eating. Participants will learn how to create a healthy relationship with food, mind and body. The series will teach how to distinguish between physical and emotional feelings and gain a sense of body wisdom.

Dr. Andrea Girman and registered dietitian Becky McCarver will help participants make peace with food and get rid of "food worry" thoughts.

Classes will be held Wednesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. in St. Luke's River Run Conference Rooms.

Everyone is invited to the first session on May 7, but registration is required for the next three sessions. Call St. Luke's Center for Community Health at 727-8733 for registration or more information.

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center will offer free blood pressure checks at the Ketchum Post Office on Wednesday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop in and have your blood pressure checked by a St. Luke's registered nurse.

ITD funds Safe Routes to School

The Idaho Transportation Department announced this month that $1 million is available for 2009 for local projects encouraging children to walk and bicycle to school.

ITD is seeking applicants to divvy up the funds for the Safe Routes to School program.

Idaho schools, nonprofit organizations, local governments and state agencies are encouraged to submit a letter of intent to apply for 2009 funding to ITD by May 16.

"Successful Safe Routes to School programs involve parents, children, community members, school staff, traffic engineers, city planners, law enforcement, community leaders and many others," said Josephine O'Connor, program coordinator for ITD.

Since 2007, ITD has awarded $2 million to Idaho communities to improve routes to school.

Brown-bag lunch with bone doc

St. Luke's Center for Community Health will host a free brown-bag lecture on "Top 10 Orthopedic Injuries" from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the River Run Conference Room at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Herb Alexander will present an overview of the most common conditions seen in a typical orthopedic practice, including ankle sprain, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, ACL tear, meniscal tear, shoulder dislocation, rotator cuff tear, stress fracture, carpal tunnel syndrome and fracture of the distal radius.

Get thee to the BAH

The Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau's monthly Business After Hours will take place on Thursday, May 8, from 5-7 p.m. at Classic Realty, located at 201Washington Ave. in Ketchum.

The business networking event will be co-hosted by Ciro, a Ketchum restaurant and wine bar.

Ketchum's 4th Street wins award

Steven Yearsley, an engineer with Forsgren Associates, presented the city of Ketchum with the American Council of Engineering Companies second-place Award for Engineering Excellence for the Fourth Street Heritage Corridor project.

At a meeting on Monday, May 5, Yearsley presented the award to the City Council and mayor, as well as Dale Bates and Gary Rapport, two members of the Ketchum Community Development Corporation, which helped design the project.

Gun club sets summer hours

The Hurtig Shooting Center, formerly known as the Blaine County Gun Club, will commence its summer hours beginning today, Wednesday, May 7. The shooting center is located off Ohio Gulch Road, south of Ketchum.

Under new scheduling, the center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

All club facilities will be available, including a rifle and pistol range, trap, skeet, 5-stand and a challenging sporting clays course. The facility is open to the public. Guns and ammunition are available.
