For the second time in three years, the Idaho Mountain Express has been honored as the best weekly newspaper in the state.

The Idaho Press Club on Saturday named the Express as the winner of its coveted General Excellence award, one of 42 prizes Express staff accepted at the club's annual awards banquet in downtown Boise.

A tally of 41 awards for writing, photography, design and overall excellence earned the Express an additional honor, the Sweepstakes award for weeklies. That award is given to the weekly newspaper that wins more Idaho Press Club awards than any of its competitors.

The club's Best of 2007 awards recognized excellence in print, television and radio journalism done throughout the state in 2007. All told, the Express claimed 40 percent of the 106 awards presented to weekly newspapers.

Express newspaper staff earned 17 first-place awards, including a tie for first place in the contest's new Special Coverage category. Judges honored the Express in that category for its in-depth daily coverage of the Castle Rock Fire, which burned nearly 50,000 acres near Ketchum in the summer of 2007.

"The staff members of our locally owned newspaper work long and hard—day in and day out—to meet the expectations of the valley," said Express Publisher Pam Morris. "We are proud to be able to bring the valley the state's best weekly newspaper year in and year out.

"This year, we were particularly proud of the Press Club's recognition of the newspaper's extraordinary efforts in producing daily and hourly updates in print and online during the Castle Rock Fire."

Sun Valley Guide magazine, published by Express Publishing, took home an additional seven Press Club awards, including the General Excellence award in the magazine category. The quarterly magazine dominated in the two writing categories—taking first and second place in both.
