Celebrating Idaho's talented contemporary artists, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is exhibiting the traveling 2007 Idaho Triennial exhibition. The exhibition features 25 Idaho artists in a variety of mediums.

Of the 25 artists, two Wood River Valley artists, David deVillier and Theodore Waddell, as well as the exhibition's curator, Amy Pence-Brown will be present at The Center in Ketchum for a reception on Friday, May 9, from 5:30-7 p.m. The artists and the curator will conduct a walk-through of the exhibition at 6 p.m.

"The show is good and people are curious about what is going on around the state," said The Center's visual arts curator, Courtney Gilbert. "Before we opened we had people coming."

In addition, The Center in Hailey is exhibiting work by Gerri Sayler, the 2007 Triennial Jurors Prize winner.

"We had a lot of people who came to the Hailey opening," Gilbert said. "There's always more behind the artist and their work than we know. For the Ketchum reception, we will get extra insight into the artists because Amy Pence-Brown visited all the artists' studios, and she will have lots of good stories to tell about their studios."

Since 1935 the Boise Art Museum has organized the Idaho Triennial, which has become a respected and treasured part of the museum's legacy.

"As many learned art critics will tell you, quality art should be able to make its stand alone, without any knowledge of the artist or his or her intentions for the piece," Pence-Brown said. "While I agree with that notion (that is how the artworks were originally selected, after all), I believe that additional, personal information gives the art more meaning and can add an inspiring and refreshing element to the work."

In addition, attendees can expect to hear interesting stories by area artists Waddell and deVillier. Waddell is a nationally known painter and one-time rancher who lives near Hailey. Recently, he published his first children's book, "Tucker Gets Tuckered."

DeVillier, a Ketchum resident, is a painter, sculptor and educator who creates whimsical and fantastical bird-people. His characters imbue happiness, joy, pleasure and peace.

The 2007 Idaho Triennial continues in Ketchum through June 11. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. "Continuum II: An Installation in Two Verses," by Sayler, is on view at The Center in Hailey, through June 20. Hours in Hailey are Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.
