Young ballplayers come to Nelson Field

For evaluations and a contest Saturday

Youth baseball and softball programs sponsored by the Blaine County Recreation District have a big day Saturday, April 26, at Nelson Field in Hailey. And the organizers are keeping their fingers crossed for good spring weather.

The Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run contest for ballplayers ages 7 and older will take place simultaneously with player evaluations for all Ketchum and Hailey teams in the 2008 BCRD baseball and softball youth programs.

Youngsters will be measured for pitching accuracy, hitting prowess and running ability.

The 7- to 8-year-old group meets at 10 a.m. Saturday followed by the 9- to 10-year-olds at 11 a.m., the 11- to 12-year-olds at noon and the fastpitch softball (all ages) group at 12:30 p.m.

After Saturday's fun activities at Nelson Field, coaches will gather Monday, April 28, at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Community Campus in Hailey so they can choose teams and conduct a draft in each group.

Team rosters will be made available by Wednesday, April 30, at the BCRD office in the Community Campus. And coaches will start to schedule their practice sessions.

Games will be held Mondays through Fridays from 5-9 p.m. starting the week of May 26. The final week of league play with its exciting tournaments will be June 24-26. As always, coaches and umpires are needed to volunteer their time.
