School district cancels trustee election

Board considers changes to expulsion rules

Idaho law allows school districts to cancel board of trustee elections if there's only one candidate.

So did the Blaine County School District receive declarations of candidacy for the Zone 5 trustee position from anyone other than incumbent Julie Dahlgren by last Friday's filing deadline?

"No sir, we sure didn't," Board Clerk Cathy Zaccardi said Monday.

The election has now been cancelled. It had been set for May 20.

The school board has recently drawn public criticism for its student expulsion practices, but Zaccardi said the board does not see the lack of new candidates for the Zone 5 spot as a vindication of its policy.

In fact, Zaccardi said, the board of trustees is discussing modifications to expulsion rules that would allow new recreational and educational opportunities to expelled students.

Currently, expelled students are typically barred, except under tightly controlled circumstances, from being on school property, which includes the Community Campus in Hailey where College of Southern Idaho, Blaine County Recreation District and other facilities and offices are located.

"The rules may be amended, they may be modified," said Zaccardi. "I'm not saying they will be modified, but they may."
