Suspect charged with battery with a child present

Hailey police arrested a 36-year-old Hailey man late Sunday afternoon for allegedly roughing up his former girlfriend and her mother in the presence of a child.

Christopher D. Maddox was taken into custody on suspicion of felony aggravated battery, but was only charged with misdemeanor "domestic battery with a child present" at his arraignment Monday in Blaine County Magistrate Court. Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Thomas could not be reached Tuesday for comment on the case.

Maddox was released later that day from the Blaine County Jail after posting $2,500 bond.

Hailey police reported that the alleged altercation took place shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at a home on Pocahontas in east Hailey.

"This is more or less a child custody dispute," said Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter.

A Hailey police report on the incident did not list the age of the child but Gunter described the boy as a "toddler."

Gunter said Maddox allegedly "battered" both his former girlfriend and her mother, and facial injuries to the latter were serious enough to require hospital treatment. The woman was transported that evening by Wood River Fire and Rescue ambulance to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center and was later treated for the injuries in Twin Falls.
