Engel goes down, Wolverines lose

Tuesday was a bleak outing for the Wolverine softball team—they not only lost the game but also one of their best players.

Sam Engel will be out for an indeterminate time following an ankle injury in a Wood River High school 6-1 home loss to the Minico Spartans.

"The injury to Sam Engel really hurt us," said Wolverine coach Dale Martin. "The team seemed to go flat after her injury. Not sure how long she'll be out."

The Wolverines gave up five unearned runs to the Spartans, who led throughout the seven frames. Wood River scored its sole run in the seventh.

Hannah Gove struck out seven but still took the loss to winning Spartan pitcher Ali Thain.

Engel, Angela Coleman, Tasha Karst and K.D. Pruett had one hit apiece.

The loss dropped the Wolverines to 0-3 in Great Basin Western Conference play and 5-8 overall.

Wood River goes on the road Saturday for a doubleheader at Kuna. Game time is 11 a.m.
