Pitcher Brian Bray got the nod to start for the first time this season and responded by tossing a scoreless one-hitter against Filer Tuesday as home-field Wood River won 12-0 in five quick frames.
"Brian is one of our best ground-ball pitchers, and he's been working hard all week. It paid off tonight," said Wolverine coach Matt Nelson. "He did a great job."
In three innings Bray tossed 40 pitches, which is the number Nelson wanted from him. His bid for a no-no was broken up in the third with a hit through the infield gap. Wolverine freshman Jake Freeman pitched the fourth and fifth frames, retiring all six batters he faced—three on strikeouts.
Leading 3-0, the Wolverines (6-9) pieced together a 5-run second, highlighted by Greg Wakfield's base-clearing triple. The team tacked on another three runs in the third and one in the fifth to end the game by 10-run mercy rule.
Kevin Abbott (double) and Michale Brunker (2 runs) were both 2-for-3. Bray knocked twice with 3RBI. Sean Bunce tallied a hit and run.
Home to Twin Falls Thursday, the Wolverines play host to Bonneville on Saturday and travel to Jerome Monday for the first of a home and home series against the Tigers, who come to Hailey on Tuesday.
