Wood River thinclads at Declo

Raw winds and icy cold swirled around the participants of the Declo Invitational track and field meet last Thursday, but the Wolverines were still hot enough to turn in some sizzling performances.

WRHS girls' coach J.C. Nemecek said, "On a cold day, four girls put together some very strong performances. I am pleased with what they did and the focus they maintained in unpleasant conditions."

Wood River competed in a four-team field along with Raft River, Oakley and Declo. With a strong effort, Raft River won the girls' team title with 101 points. Host Declo was second with 51, followed by Oakley at 34 and Wood River 28.

The boys' team scores were much tighter. Only 18 points separated the first-place Oakley Hornets (76) from the fourth-place Wolverines (58). Runner-up went to Declo (67) and third to Raft River (58).

"The kids are really getting a lot better," coach Mike Glenne said. "We're kind of putting around right now, but our times are improving."

The Wolverines garnered several standout performances with wins by Tanner Dredge, Andrew Orr, Chase Caulkins and Dale McLaughlin. Silver medalists were Grace Lagodich, James Paris, Pedro Morales, Rob Paris, Dredge, as well as boys' quartets in the 4x400 and medley relays and the girls' medley relay team.

Next up for the Wolverines is the Buhl Rotary Invitational on Thursday, April 17. Poor track conditions have forced the cancellation of the annual Bob Shay Memorial track meet, scheduled for April 22 at Wood River High School in Hailey.
