Panthers ahead of the pack in Northside track

The Carey boys blew away the competition at a Northside Conference track and field meet at ISDB in Gooding Thursday.

The Panthers amassed 148 points to finish 65 points ahead of runner-up Camas County, and this despite the fact that senior Blake Whitby chose to compete in the Declo Invitational to give himself a little more competition than he faces in the 1A ranks.

On the Gooding oval, the Panthers put people in the top six in 14 of the 17 events, winning six outright. D.J. Simpson captured the 800m race in 2:15.0. Kade Peterson claimed the 3200-meter run in 11:40.6. Tyler Parke was tops in high jump, clearing 5-10 to best teammate Jacy Baird by six inches. The Panthers also won three out of four relays, including the 4x400, 4x200 and 4x100.

Third out of 11 teams, the Carey girls were propelled to a team bronze by sophomore Amy Ellsworth, who single-handedly rang up 30 individual points with victories in the 400m and 1600m runs and triple jump. Ellsworth also anchored the winning medley relay team of Shelby Hansen, Jen Cenarrusa and Kayla Bailey. With a leap of 4-0, Jessica Parke won the high jump.

In the girls' meet, Shoshone was the top squad with 102 points, followed by Camas Count with 90. Carey tallied 62.

Over at the Declo Invitational, Blake Whitby won the 1600m run in 4:52.6 and was second in the 3200 meters in 10:39.

The Panthers host the next Northside Conference showdown on Thursday, April 17, at Derrick Parke Memorial Field. Providing additional competition will be teams from Mackay, Rockland, Oakley and Jackpot, Nev.
