A 48-year-old man has been charged with attempted strangulation for allegedly attacking his wife at the couple's home in northwest Hailey last week.
Alfredo Mejorado was arrested by Hailey police on Tuesday, April 8. He was arraigned on the felony charge the following day in Blaine County Magistrate Court. Mejorado was released from the Blaine County Jail later that day after posting $10,000 bond.
Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said police were called by the suspect's 39-year-old wife to the couple's home on West Carbonate Street shortly before 3 p.m. on April 8.
"Apparently they had been arguing throughout the day and it just escalated to the point that we had to get involved," Gunter said. "He allegedly threw her on the bed and attempted to strangle her. She called after she got away from him.
"There were some marks on her that indicate that this may have happened before."
Gunter said the woman was not injured to the point that she required hospitalization.
He said reports of serious domestic violence crimes, including attempted strangulation, are becoming more common in Hailey.
"We're starting to see more and more of this, unfortunately," the police chief said.
Gunter advised victims of domestic violence to try to call police before situations become violent.
"If we get called we can try to calm the situation down before someone gets hurt," he said.
