Minico rides Broadhead’s broad shoulders to win

Spartans shutout Wolverines

Minico senior Dane Broadhead is a highly regarded quarterback with a scholarship to play football at Carroll College in Montana next season.

In the meantime, the left-handed senior is playing some pretty good baseball.

In a Great Basin Conference West matchup between Minico and Wood River Tuesday, Broadhead tossed a one-hit, 12-strikeout complete-game gem in a 9-0 Spartan victory.

Broadhead issued only one hit and one walk in seven innings of work, and was equally effective offensively, going 3-for-4 with a homerun and 4 RBI. Michale Brunker managed the sole knock of the day for the Wolverines.

It was the tenth straight victory for Minico (10-1, 1-0 league), last year's State 4A runner-up, and first league win of the season.

The Wolverines (3-8) returned to Minico Thursday for a game that had been originally scheduled in Hailey and coach Matt Nelson was hopeful that his team would have a better showing the second time around.

Nelson is also optimistic Founder's Field will be dry enough for Wood River to stage its first home games tomorrow, Saturday, April 12.

Weather permitting, the Wolverines will host Preston in doubleheader action starting at noon. Filer is tapped as Hailey's guest on Tuesday.
