A sun-spangled banner?

Sun Valley sets contest to design city flag

The city of Sun Valley is taking an important decision out of the hands of elected officials and placing it into the hands of all Blaine County's public.

Mayor Wayne Willich announced that Sun Valley is sponsoring a contest to develop an official flag and an official seal for the city, helping commemorate Sun Valley's 61st anniversary.

The contest, which will run from April 14 through June 6, is open to all residents of Blaine County, regardless of age, and the winners of both contests will be announced at a City Council meeting on June 19.

Sun Valley City Clerk Kelly Ek said the city is encouraging teachers to participate as a class project, or offer students extra credit.

"This is a perfect opportunity for students to learn about and study the unique history of Sun Valley, as well as to participate with local government and increase civic awareness by participating in something fun and exciting," Ek said.

Five finalists for both contests will be chosen by Willich and Ek, as well as Sun Valley Co. Manager Wally Huffman, Community Library historian Chris Millspaugh and Sun Valley resident Beverly Reeves. The City Council will choose the two winners, who will each receive a $100 Chamber Choice gift certificate.

Contestants should include key elements of the city's historical past in addition to a vision of Sun Valley's future, as submissions will be judged on creativity, originality and historic content.

Entry forms and additional information will be available at Sun Valley City Hall and the Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau office in Ketchum.
