Snowbird gives IMD racers a last chance

Alpine kids wrap up winter in tech races

Snowbird, Utah hosted nearly 220 Intermountain Division alpine ski racers last weekend for the 65th annual Snow Cup giant slalom and Last Chance slalom technical races that wrap up the 2007-08 winter season.

Forty in the 216-racer men's and women's fields came from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Hailey Ski Team and Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing. And two of the men's leaders came from Sun Valley.

Hailey Ski Team coach Carl Rixon Jr., 26, won both of the Snow Cup giant slaloms by .77 seconds and 1.00 second among 141 men Friday and Saturday on Prim Rose Path.

Nate Schwing, 28, the SVSEF J1-J2 IMD head coach this winter, placed eighth of 90 two-run finishers in Friday's GS opener and moved up to fourth in Saturday's GS finale. Schwing ended up fifth of 95 two-run finishers in Sunday's slalom.

Other highlights included two J1 (ages 17-19) bronze medals in giant slalom and a pair of slalom golds for Hailey Ski Team racer Calley Brown; two J1 slalom silvers for Soldier Mountain's Alisa Durkheimer; and a gold GS, bronze SL and silver SL finish for Hailey J3 Amanda Stelling.

J2 (14-15) Bailey Ireland captured first place in her class in Friday's GS opener; Bergen Palmer posted 17th and 8th place overall finishes in slalom, 5th each day in his J2 class; and J3 Tanner Farrow won the slalom silver in Monday's finale.
