No gondola on Baldy until 2009

Construction set to begin this fall

Skiers on Bald Mountain next season will once again have to take a chairlift to get to the Roundhouse restaurant, as the completion date for a new gondola has been pushed back.

Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach said that while construction of the gondola will start in September, it won't be operational until the 2009-2010 ski season.

The gondola will leave from the base of River Run and terminate at the Roundhouse, which is scheduled for renovation next year. It will replace the existing Exhibition chairlift.

"We pushed it back because plans for Roundhouse and the top terminal have yet to be finished," Sibbach said.

He added that once the plans are finished, they will be submitted to the U.S. Forest Service for a 45-day review.

Sibbach said the delay would allow the Sun Valley Center for the Arts to hold events at the base of River Run this summer, but that no arrangements have been made yet.

He said that while he wasn't certain, planning could have been delayed because of the resort's other current large developments, including the Sun Valley Music Pavilion and the Sun Valley Golf and Nordic Clubhouse, both of which are scheduled to open in August.
