The fourth annual Holding Cup handicap ski races return to Sun Valley Resort this weekend with three days of skiing and social events.
Everybody will be shooting for the University of Colorado, winners of the Holding Cup when the event was staged in 2007 and 2005. A late-spring snowstorm contributed to the cancellation of the 2006 race.
Last year's Colorado champions over second-place University of Washington and third-place Montana State were Kipp Nelson, Nick Maricich, Karoline Droege, Mike Lafferty and Erik Veterline. There were six teams last March.
The 2005 CU Boulder kings over Montana State and Middlebury in an eight-team field were Kipp Nelson, Steve Brown, Dave Tengen, Amber Acker and Brian Daluiso.
Registration and bib pick-up take place Thursday, March 27 from 3-4 p.m. at Warm Springs Lodge. Holding Cup qualifying runs are Friday morning on the Warm Springs side of Baldy, followed Friday evening by the party and team buy-in event.
Saturday morning, each team member takes two runs during the Carol's Consistency Cup competition. The team with the closest relative time to Friday's qualifying will collect the $500 consistency prize.
Final Holding Cup runs will be Saturday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Top prizes, $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place and $500 for the Carol's Consistency Cup, will be awarded to the college's ski team, club or athletic department.
Awards will be presented Saturday from 3-6 p.m. at Apple's Bar & Grill, Warm Springs, Ketchum.
Skiers of all abilities are welcome to participate, with handicaps dependent on age and sex. The registration fee of $100 per person includes two days of lift tickets, food and drink at the Warm Springs Lodge and at Apple's, a Karbon Prostretch softshell jacket embroidered with the Holding Cup logo, a Holding Cup hat and an embroidered Karbon base layer shirt, as well as two days of fun with fellow alumni.
