Eighteen Blaine County School District "Chess Rage" students traveled to Boise Saturday, March 15 for the Idaho State Scholastic Chess Tournament at Riverglen Junior High. Nearly 300 students competed in a one-day tournament that determined state scholastic chess champions.
Wood River High School science teacher and team coach Adam Porth said BCSD "Chess Rage" won the K-12 team championship by a nail-biting tiebreaker over the Boise Capitals. It was the best ever state tourney finish for Wood River.
Saturday's contest was actually several grade level and team tournaments embedded into one large competition. Wood River also received a third place in the junior high school division. Individually, junior Kitt Connor earned second place and freshman Andrew Uriarte captured third.
Top players for the high school team were Connor, Danny Mills and Dexter Gannon. Younger kids placing high were Reilly Neel, Desmond Porth and Dylan Porth.
The traveling team also featured Sean Schupak, Tyler Jaramillo, Nick Bruck, Chris Ellis, Brad Thomas, Max Bates, Junior Hidalgo, Johnny Dilley, Danny Mills, Keenan Cassidy, JJ Thomson, Taylor Walton, Tyler Wolfley and Juve Ruiz.
