Ketchum and Sun Valley police reported smooth sailing for last weekend's 48 Straight festivities, but farther south arrests were made left and right as lawmen were out in force watching for drunk drivers.
Twenty-one alleged lawbreakers were booked into the Blaine County Jail over the weekend running from 5 p.m. on Friday through midnight Sunday. Eleven arrests were for alleged DUI infractions. Most of the others were on marijuana or other controlled-substance charges, driving without privileges or underage drinking.
Idaho State Police had five patrol cars on duty in the Wood River Valley throughout most of the weekend. Along with Blaine County Sheriff's deputies, they staked out the stretch of state Highway 75 between Ketchum and Hailey where most of the arrests were made.
Besides 48 Straight, it was also St. Patrick's Day weekend and funding for overtime police patrols was available to ISP and local lawmen through a federal grant procured by the Idaho Transportation Department.
Sun Valley police made two DUI arrests but otherwise had no problems over the weekend.
"It was just a lot of traffic," said Sun Valley Police Chief Cameron Daggett. "We didn't have any incidents. It basically came out pretty well."
Ketchum police reported similar satisfaction, though a bicyclist crashed into a pedestrian early Saturday morning and someone did a "hit and run" after knocking a pole off its moorings in front of Starbucks on Main Street.
"No complaints from us. We were very, very happy," said Ketchum police spokeswoman Kim Rogers.
