Wolverine tennis welcomes 68 players

WRHS wins first meet 10-2 at Gooding


Tennis coach Vicki Johnson has welcomed 68 players to one of the most successful athletic programs over the years at Hailey's Wood River High School.

Wood River, fourth as a team in the Great Basin Conference in 2007 and sixth overall at the State 4A tournament, debuted its 2008 season with a 10-2 win at Gooding Tuesday.

Returning state tournament players for Wood River are senior Tessa Barrow, junior

Tanya Greenwood and sophomore Brendan Freund.

Greenwood played #1 girls' singles Tuesday and captured a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gooding's Amanda Rider. In girls' doubles, Barrow and Kami Doan breezed 6-0, 6-1 over Melissa Lockwood and Kendra Cockerham of Gooding. Wood River won all six doubles matches.

Wood River traveled to Pocatello Saturday, March 15, for matches at Pocatello (11 a.m.) and Century (afterwards).

Here are Tuesday's results from Gooding, followed by a roster of other WRHS players:

Boys' singles: 1—Jason Barbee (WR) 6-2, 6-3 over Jacob Bow (G). 2—John Kallenberg (G) 6-0, 6-1 over Nick Allen (WR). 3—Kirk Kerr (G) 6-2, 6-2 over Brian Perry (WR).

Girls' singles: 1—Tanya Greenwood (WR) 6-1, 6-2 over Amanda Rider (G). 2—Aya Masumitsu (WR) 6-4, 6-4 over Alissa Reed (G). 3—Jordan Hendricks (WR) 6-1, 6-0 over Jessica Thatcher (G).

Boys' doubles: 1—Scott Pike and Andrew Pfeiffer (WR) 6-0, 6-3 over Chase McLeod and Richard Kelly (G). 2—Jesse Souligny and Ben Hofferber (WR) 6-3, 7-5 over Gunner Jensen and Josh Bullers (G).

Girls' doubles: 1—Tessa Barrow and Kami Doan (WR) 6-0, 6-1 over Melissa Lockwood and Kendra Cockerham (G). 2—Allie Freund and Breeze Potter (WR) by default, 8-0.

Mixed doubles: 1—Ben Leopold and Jessica Hamilton (WR) 6-1, 6-0 over Tim Arkoosh and Renee Howell (G). 2—Hunter Scarborough and Ellen Davis (WR) 6-0, 6-0 over Brianna Qualls and Jaesoo Park (G).
