Parrish Memorial returns to Baldy March 22-23

Bumps and super giant slalom

Local skiers are gearing up for the "Race for Locals," also known as the 16th annual Lane Parrish Memorial. It is planned for Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23 on Baldy.

A classic Sun Valley persona of the 1960s and 1970s, Parrish was a speed and bump skier and movie stuntman who died at age 33 in a plane crash near Twin Falls in 1990.

You walk past and pause at a picnic table in Lane Parrish's memory when you hike up Adams Gulch north of Ketchum.

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Freestyle Team and Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing are the hosts.

At stake is $5,000 in prize money, with all venues racing for the bucks.

Registration continues through Friday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at Apple's Bar & Grill, Warm Springs, Ketchum.

Moguls racing, staged by coach John Zuck and the Sun Valley Freestyle Team, is Saturday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. Air, turns and overall impression will be judged with the highest scoring winning.

The Parrish Memorial super giant slalom, hosted by Ken Corrock and Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing, is Sunday, March 23 starting at 10:30 a.m. on the Greyhawk course through Cozy and Hemingway.

After Sunday's Parrish Memorial first super G run, the "New Diamond Sun Dash for Cash" will feature the top 15 men and top five women from the earlier heat.

Skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders in several age groups are encouraged to join the fun. Corrock said, "And any other thing you can use to slide down Baldy legally."

Super G and bumps age groups in past years have been J3 and younger (12-and-under), J2 and older (13-19), 20-39, 40-59 and 60-plus.

The friendly, local competition provides funds for Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing and the Sun Valley Freestyle Team.

Cost is $25 per day or $40 for the weekend. All entries receive a Parrish Memorial T-shirt. Sign up at the SVSEF office in the Greyhawk building or at Apple's.

Last year there was a $7,000 cash purse going to the top skiers. Overall champions of the Parrish SG were three-time winner Matt Luhn and Ashley Brown. Combined winners were Olin Glenne for the fourth time in six years and Christine Cordeau. Best in the bumps were Shane Cordeau and Christine Cordeau. "Dash for Cash" winners were Matt Murphy and Christine Cordeau.
