Board expels another student

The Blaine County School District board of trustees has scheduled a trustee election for May 20.

Up for grabs is the trustee position from Zone 5, now held by Julie Dahlgren, who also serves as the board's vice chairwoman. The term of office is three years.

The election was approved at the school board's regular monthly meeting on Tuesday.

Zone 5 encompasses the area north of East Fork and east of state Highway 75 to the Custer County line. Within the boundary is east Ketchum and the city of Sun Valley, including Elkhorn.

Voting will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum.

Board Clerk Cathy Zaccardi said Dahlgren is expected to run for re-election.

"I don't have her declaration for candidacy, but I'm sure she's going to run," Zaccardi said.

Declaration for candidacy forms became available Wednesday at the school district office at 118 West Bullion St. in Hailey. Deadline for filing is April 18.

"Anything that comes in after the close of business that day will not be considered," Zaccardi said. "If only one candidate is running, then no election is held."

Additional information on the election can be obtained from Zaccardi at 578-5003.

· In other business, the school board expelled another student following a formal expulsion hearing in closed executive session. Zaccardi said the expulsion is for one full calendar year, but declined to release additional information, including even the number that is used in official board meeting minutes to refer to the student.

"I'm not giving you the number," Zaccardi said. "There's no reason for you to have that. All you need to know is that a Blaine County School District student was expelled from Wood River High School."

The school board has expelled seven students thus far this school year.
