Fun weekend for Nordic kids at Lake Creek

170 youngsters enjoy Western States Youth Festival

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country ski coach Abi Holt summed up her feelings about last weekend's 18th annual Western States Youth Cross Country Ski Festival at Lake Creek by saying:

"All in all, the inherent mayhem in hosting four races for 170 kids under the age of 16 was well worth the effort. The weekend provided a nice mix of serious racing and more goofy events. It was also a great opportunity for kids and parents from all over the Intermountain Division to mix and have some fun."

The SVSEF hosted the two-day event at the Lake Creek trail system north of Ketchum.

On Saturday, all the teams competed in a skate race, timed obstacle course and downhill competition. On Sunday morning, racers were back for a classic race.

In the combined scoring, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation won the team competition with 1945 points ahead of Bozeman, Montana with 1876 points.

Sun Valley had 410 points in the skate, 560 downhill, 540 obstacle course and 435 in the classic race. The home team's 124-point bulge over Bozeman in the downhill and 40-point edge in obstacle made the winning difference.

Other teams and their final point totals for the four events were Salt Lake 1561, Glacier 1285, McCall 1128, Park City 921, Jackson Hole 735 and Bogus Basin 681.

Bozeman won the Sportsmanship Award voted upon by the coaches.
