Life in the Wood River Valley is fast becoming a stronger shade of green. Businesses and residents have taken up the cause of keeping the planet healthy through changes in their lifestyles and business practices. To celebrate and encourage this, the second annual issue of Habitat magazine has gone green.

Released today, the 2008 Habitat is a thoroughly local look at how residents and visitors can be more environmentally friendly here in the Wood River Valley. Habitat is the home-and-garden companion to the Sun Valley Guide, the resort magazine that invites readers to "Discover Mountain Life."

"Our aim with this issue of Habitat, in the works for over a year now, is to provide a one-stop green shop, an easy reference guide for all your green questions and concerns," said Habitat/Sun Valley Guide editor Jennifer Tuohy. "We hope that our readers will learn from its content, and by acting on that knowledge, help make our valley an even better place to live."

Tuohy, who is taking extended maternity leave following the publication of Habitat, found herself similarly motivated as the magazine's content evolved—she even purchased a hybrid Toyota Prius.

"I was definitely inspired to make changes in my own life through the research we did," she said. "I hope the same will be true for our readers."

The main feature in the magazine, "17 Ways To Be Green in the Wood River Valley," is an information-packed smorgasbord for readers looking to be more eco-conscious in their everyday lives. From understanding the concept of the carbon footprint and the importance of shopping locally to choosing the best skincare and cleaning products for maximum health and environmental benefits, many aspects of green living are explored.

Other Habitat stories include tips to garden green through the careful use of water and native landscaping; ideas for decorating your home in an environmentally friendly way; how to eat locally through supermarkets and organizations such as Idaho's Bounty; throwing a green party; raising children to be more eco-conscious; building a sustainable home; recycling household waste in the Wood River Valley and how local government is helping to make our community more green.
