More than 2,000 residents in Ketchum were left without power on the night of Sunday, Feb. 24, temporarily interrupting the Oscars for many viewers as televisions went blank.

For most, the outage lasted a mere 10 minutes, but for approximately 80 homes it went on for more than two hours.

Anne Alenskis, a spokesperson for Idaho Power Co., said a passing driver noticed sparks coming from a transformer on Warm Springs Road and phoned in the report. She said the malfunctioning transformer, located across from Jerry's Market on Warm Springs Road, affected neighborhoods from Washington Avenue to Wood River Drive, as well as homes farther west on Warm Springs Road.

"The power was out from 7:45 to 7:55 p.m., and there were 80 homes that remained without power until 10 p.m.," Alenskis said.

No information was given as to why the transformer malfunctioned.

Idaho Power also announced a power outage at 12:12 p.m. Tuesday that affected 750 customers in the Woodside area of Hailey. A company spokesperson said the reason for the outage was not known at the time, but a crew was patrolling the neighborhood looking for a possible source of the power failure.
