Who could resist a sporting event boasting the slogan, "Ski, Board or Skate the Great Potato 2008"? Certainly not members of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club (SVFSC).
SVFSC hosted the 19th annual Winter Games of Idaho figure skating competition Saturday, Feb. 9 at Sun Valley Skating Center. Competitive skaters from six enjoyed the unique, fun and casual statewide event at the resort.
There were 68 skaters competing in 52 categories, with many skaters entering multiple events. The competition was a huge success and lots of fun for everyone, SVFSC publicity chair Andrea Nelson said.
Among SVFSC gold medalists were Telar McClure three times in Preliminary Girls, Nicole Pratt in Juvenile Artistic and Interpretive, Julia Broderick in Open Juvenile Artistic and Julianna Lamb in Intermediate/Novice Showcase.
Claire Siderman did particularly well in Pre-Preliminary with golds in Artistic, Interpretive and Showcase while Lex Shapiro gained gold in the class in Freeskating. Cameron Rawlings and MacKenzie Caputo won High Freestyle 4-6 golds.
Isabella Bourret won gold medals in Low Freestyle Artistic and Interpretive. In the Snowplow Sam class, KiKi Caputo, Caroline Hold and Sage Curtis picked up gold medals.
Among Basic Skills Winter Games gold medalists from SVFSC were Syndee Nethery, Samantha Bunting, Blair Baker, Christine DuFur, Helene Hawes, Travis Flynt, Noelle Weaver, Blake Letourneau, Claire Fisher, Sophia Nicolai, Isabella Cronin and Antonia Avery.
The Winter Games gave many local skaters to compete for the first time, among them Claire and Marcella Fisher, Grace Hoffman, Blake and Lane Letourneau, Isabella Cronin, Karsyn Garringa, Victoria Wood, Lydia and Emelia Morgan, Antonia Avery, Travis Flynt, Caroline Hold, Kiki Caputo, Zoe Simon, Sage Curtis and Shea Kelly.
Several of the younger competitors came fresh from the SVFSC's ongoing "Fantastic Friday's Skate with Us," entry-level group classes.
