Valley residents report seeing meteor

Several Wood River Valley residents received more than a flash of inspiration Tuesday when a meteor was spotted in the early-morning sky.

Bob Thompson, a resident of The Meadows south of Ketchum, said he was outside with his dog when a flash of light caught his eye.

"It looked like lightning, but instead of being bright white it was more yellow," Thompson said. "It looked like a flash of light heading north. It was very quick."

Residents throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Boise, Portland, Seattle and Spokane, reported seeing the meteor, a transient fiery streak in the sky produced by a meteoroid passing through the Earth's atmosphere, which was confirmed by a Federal Aviation Administration duty officer in Seattle.

Mike Fergus, an FAA spokesman in Seattle, said a Horizon Airlines pilot saw the meteorite hit earth at about 6:45 a.m. Fergus said the pilot reported a flash and a burst of light in Adams County, Wash., near the southeast corner of the state.

Hailey-based KECH radio disc jockey Lenny Joseph said his listener line was ringing off the hook Tuesday morning, as people relayed their eyewitness accounts.

"Lots of people saw it," Joseph said. "They were calling all morning."
