The Main Street shuffle

Dirty Little Roddy?s to make way for McClain?s

There's no doubt that 271 Main St. in Ketchum has a beleaguered history. Business ventures there don't seem to last long.

Current occupant Dirty Little Roddy's, which opened last March, will end its run soon, with McClain's Pizzeria set to take over the lease on April 1.

"We have some worries about the bad karma," said McClain Balmer, who, with his wife, Robyn, will relocate their pizza restaurant from 520 Washington Ave. "But hopefully it will help that my family took that location from an automotive garage to a restaurant back in the 60s."

McClain said he and his wife were looking for an alternative spot for their restaurant, as their lease will expire in March 2009 since their current location is scheduled to be redeveloped into a mixed commercial and residential building.

He said he was approached by Dirty Little Roddy's owner Ted Challenger around three weeks ago, who said he wasn't able to spend enough time in Ketchum to make his bar work.

While a subleasing contract has yet to be signed, McClain said he hopes to have his new restaurant open by mid-April after making some changes. Those will include installing the pizza ovens where Roddy's mechanical bull now sits and adding video games in the back room for children.

"We want to keep the same atmosphere and have the ovens out front rather than stuck back in the kitchen," McClain said. "It will basically be the same as here, except with way more tables."

In addition to an increase in seating capacity, McClain said they will also have a full liquor license, as opposed to just beer, and will likely stay open later at night, though they hadn't decided the details yet.
