The snow and wind were obstacles that the Sun Valley Suns men's hockey team just couldn't overcome Friday during their trip to Jackson Hole, Wyo. for a two-game series with the Jackson Hole Moose.
Sun Valley Suns players in separate cars got as far as Idaho Falls before turning back due to high winds and drifting snow that closed U.S. 26 along the Snake River east of Idaho Falls. So, last weekend's series in Jackson Hole was postponed.
The road closure, enforced by the Idaho Department of Transportation about noon Friday, stranded about 300 people in the tiny U.S. 26/S.H. 31 junction town of Swan Valley. Already, Teton Pass had been closed so there was no highway route open into Jackson Hole.
Sun Valley's two-game series in Wyoming has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22 at the end of the Suns season.
Idle three weeks, the Suns (8-2) return to action with their three-game win streak intact Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16 against Team Utah. Opening faceoffs are 7 p.m. at Sun Valley Skating Center. Saturday's game benefits the Wood River Baseball Association.
This weekend's games are the first in a six-weekend, 12-game stretch—10 games at home for the Suns. Sun Valley hosts the Missoula (Mt.) Cutthroats Feb. 22-23, the Jackson Hole Moose Feb. 29-March 1, a Canadian team March 7-8 and goalie Bobby Farrelly's East Coast Gutter Snipes for the March 14-15 home finale.
