Police investigate ?illegal? elk feeding at Sagewillow

Sun Valley police are trying to figure out who "illegally" fed hay to elk at The Community School Campus at Sagewillow in Elkhorn.

Feeding elk per se is not illegal, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, but the hay was found along the driveway leading to the school's soccer fields and Sun Valley police are considering trespass or littering charges if they find the perpetrator.

Assistant Police Chief Mike Crawford said that three bales of hay were found scattered along the driveway Monday morning. Fish and Game Conservation Officer Lee Garwood was called to the scene and told the Idaho Mountain Express later that the hay likely posed no health threat to the elk that ate it.

"It's not illegal to feed big game," said Garwood. "The problem in this situation is that somebody did it without The Community School's permission."

Large numbers of elk have been congregating in the area, perhaps anticipating the feed that they received in years past from The Community School. The practice was discontinued in December after the Sagewillow Homeowners Association filed a lawsuit against the school.
