Wood River Land Trust contest shows off valley talents

Larry Barnes won first place in the Wood River Land Trust?s Heart of the Valley contest for his photograph, ?The Sun Sets on Quigley.?

Winners of the Wood River Land Trust's fourth annual Heart of the Valley contest were announced Wednesday, Jan. 23, at an awards reception at the Images of Nature Gallery in Ketchum. Contestants submitted narrative writing, poetry and photographs to illustrate the many attributes that distinguish the Wood River Valley from other mountain communities.

Winners for narrative writing were "Eternity" by Marly Morgus in first place, "The Importance of Having Ernest" by Lee Brown in second place and "Sage Time" by Harry Weekes in third place. In the poetry category, first place went to Hank Dart for "Ochre Ringlets," second place to La'akea Smith for "Boulders" and third place to Chris McAvoy for "Tension." "Big Wood River" by Amaya Ingram won as a staff favorite for writing.

For photography, first place went to Larry Barnes for "The Sun Sets on Quigley," second place to Beverly Robertson for "One Less Car" and third place to Cody Boeger for "Riverside Sandals." There were several photography honorable mentions: "One Fly" by Joshua Wells, "Dollar and Baldy" by Beverly Robertson, "Snowy Trail" by Maria Parkhill and "South Valley" by Patricia Bolding. "South Valley" was also a staff favorite.

Iconoclast Books will host readings from the Heart of the Valley contest at its Ketchum store on two consecutive Wednesdays, Feb. 13 and Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m. The winners of this year's contest can be viewed on the Wood River Land Trust's community page.
