GOP primary is not closed

In last week's Mountain Express, I was quoted as saying the Democratic caucus, unlike the Republican primary, is open to anyone who wishes to vote for a Democratic candidate for president. My good friend Maurice Charlat, Blaine County Republican chairman, has accurately pointed out that the Republican primary is not closed.

In Idaho, no political party registration is required to participate in selection of either party's nominee. However, this may not remain true if the Republican State Central Committee has its way. Central Committee Republicans have voted in favor of closing the primaries, but such a measure has yet to pass the Legislature.

The Republican primary, open to those who want to select a Republican candidate, will take place in May 27, 2008. The Democratic caucus will take place Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at the Community Campus in Hailey. Everyone who wants to participate must be present by no later than 7 p.m., and plan to stay for at least an hour. Babysitters will be available onsite.

May the best man, or woman, win.
