Many of the Intermountain Division's top Masters alpine ski racers converged on Baldy last weekend for the 11th annual Sun Valley Ski Club Skoch Cup, sponsored by Formula Sports of Ketchum.
Proving themselves as the top male and female competitors of the three-day racing series were Hailey's John Campbell, 45, and Dana Alexandrescu, 31, of Park City, Utah.
There were 82 racers.
Campbell (1:01.57) finished a close second to longtime Ketchum racer Matt Luhn (1:01.29) in Friday's super giant slalom on Baldy's Hemingway, Cozy and Greyhawk ski runs.
Then, on Saturday, Campbell captured the giant slalom by .25 seconds over Toby Chapman. Campbell added the overall slalom victory Sunday on the Cozy course, by .36 seconds over Ryan Leach.
Alexandrescu, originally from Romania, came to the U.S. at the age of 17 and walked on as an alpine skier for the University of Denver. The Jans Cup Masters race winner from 2005-07, she is the reigning national Masters slalom queen.
She was right up with the men in the weekend technical races, placing 11th overall and first among the women in Saturday's Hemingway-Cozy-Greyhawk giant slalom and a heady seventh overall in Sunday's slalom finale.
The top women in Friday's SG were Glenn McConkey, Amy Lanzel and Joanne Zwingenberg. And Bob Sarchett clocked the fastest time among the men on the C/D super giant slalom course Friday.
Next for the local Masters skiers is the Jans Cup Loritz Cup Classic three-day event Jan. 25-27 at Park City Mountain Resort, Utah. Super giant slalom is Friday at 11 a.m. on Payday, with GS Saturday at 10 a.m. on CB's Run and SL Sunday at 10 a.m. on Picabo's Run.
