The lights were off for about four hours Monday afternoon, Jan. 14, in a widespread area including Hailey, Bellevue, Carey, Picabo and Richfield.

Idaho Power Co. reported that the power was off in certain locations from 3:55 p.m. through around 8 p.m. Some areas had power restored earlier than others, but at its peak, 7,000 customers were without electricity, said Idaho Power spokesperson Anne Alenskis.

The outage was due to a broken shield wire on a transmission line between Silver Street in Hailey and the Hailey substations. Crews isolated the damaged line and made repairs.

"The reason it took a while to restore the power was because of the cold weather," Alenskis said. "It requires a strategic process to restore the power in sections, especially in cold weather."

Alenskis pointed out that crews were out right away, and with safety in mind.
