Hospital to discontinue birth announcements

By EXPRESS STAFF
Express Staff Writer

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center has stated it will discontinue the submission of birth announcements to local newspapers starting Friday, Jan. 11. In a news release, the hospital stated that new parents will be provided with contact information for local newspapers if they wish to make their own announcement.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has reported that a small number of infant abductions have been linked to birth announcements in local papers. Also, in April 1999, the Joint Commission, which evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, recommended that hospitals discourage parents from publishing their newborns' names in newspapers.

Listings of newborns in the paper is typically a voluntary act by the mother, and hospitals have facilitated it by getting information from mothers and obtaining a signed release before providing information to a paper.

To submit a birth announcement to the Idaho Mountain Express, send an e-mail to news@mtexpress.com, or deliver a hard copy of the information to the newspaper's office at 591 First Ave. N. in Ketchum.

Please include the baby's full name, the parents' names, the parents' place of residence, the weight of the baby, the place of the birth and the date of the birth. Include the parents' phone number for verification.
