Belly up for Billy Goat Loppet

Annual Nordic ski race set for Jan. 26

The Billy Goat Loppet ski race is annually a great pre-Boulder Mountain Tour warm-up (and aptly named since it's held at Billy's Bridge close to the mountain goat lookout north of Ketchum). Last January the race attracted close to 80 racers in variable weather conditions.

This year, Backwoods Mountain Sports is sponsoring the annual Sun Valley Ski Club Nordic Championship race, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. The 10-kilometer course is freestyle (skate) only. The Ski Club Championship Cup will be presented to the winning man and woman at the end of the event.

"It's a very popular race simply because no other race venue is staged at Billy's Bridge, a section of the North Valley Trails System that has beautiful views in every direction," said Jenny Busdon, race organizer and member of the Galena and Trails Advisory Council. "We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the course. It's such great skiing on this trail and perfect for getting well-tuned if you are registered to do the 30-k Boulder Tour one week later. We're looking forward to seeing a great turnout for this real fun event."

Registration will be held at Billy's Bridge between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with an 11 a.m. start. The entry fee is $10.

For further information, contact either Busdon at 726-1649, Ted Angle at 788-9458 or the ski club office at 622-3003.
